Education Volunteering
English Heritage needs you to bring History to life!
We are looking for people who are aged 18 and over to assist our site educators with workshops, tours and other activities associated with learning and school visits. All volunteer roles will support, develop or deliver site-based education activities. Anyone can get involved in a variety of short term and long term volunteering opportunities. You do not need any special skills or experience - just the desire to try something new! You will receive comprehensive training and support from English Heritage staff in the Education team and at our sites.
Education volunteering sits at the heart of English Heritage’s aim to broaden the range of activities and resources we can offer to education visitors at our sites. The involvement of volunteers is designed to increase the number and variety of interactive sessions for education groups as more people will be available on site to help deliver them. For the volunteer, the benefits of participating in the programme include learning new skills, meeting new people and helping to ensure that the historic environment is understood and enjoyed by our visitors.
9 sites are currently participating in the Education Volunteering Programme, they are: Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire, Brodsworth Hall and Gardens in Yorkshire, Fort Brockhurst in Hampshire, Goodrich Castle in Herefordshire, Great Yarmouth Row Houses in Norfolk, Kenwood House Estate in London, Pendennis Castle in Cornwall, Audley End House in Essex and Warkworth Castle in Northumberland.
We are currently recruiting Education Volunteers for Goodrich Castle, Bolsover Castle, Kenwood House and Brodsworth Hall and are therefore particularly keen to hear from potential volunteers for either of these sites. At Bolsover Castle, we are looking for volunteers to pilot and deliver with other volunteers either an Art / Architecture-based session or a History-based session to Key Stage Three groups. At Goodrich Castle, volunteers will be working in partnership with other volunteers to either deliver a story session and trail to Key Stage One groups or a History based session called ‘Life in a Medieval Castle’ to Key Stage Two and Three groups. At Kenwood House, volunteers are needed to deliver in partnership with other volunteers either the interactive Geography-based activity called ‘Estate Quest’ in the grounds of Kenwood or the Science-based activity ‘What’s Growing On?’. At Brodsworth Hall, we are looking for volunteers to help deliver our ‘Garden Detectives’ discovery visit.
