Medieval Murder and Intrigue

Exterior view in SummerEnglish Heritage has invested £50,000 on new exhibitions and displays at Farleigh Hungerford Castle. The Castle was owned by the Hungerford family for 300 years between the 14th to the 17th centuries and as it stands today shows visitors their family history - with all its ups and downs.

Speaking about the improvements, Matt Hart, English Heritage Visitor Operations Manager, said:

"These new displays and information panels will enable visitors of all ages to enjoy their visit to Farleigh Hungerford. Knowing more about the history of the place you are visiting gives an extra dimension to the experience - just being aware that Lady Elizabeth Hungerford, the third wife of Lord Walter Hungerford, was imprisoned in one of the towers really brings the scene before you to life.

"The new audio tour will be fascinating for people of all ages. It has dramatisations of scenes at the Castle telling the story of everyday life in the Castle including stories of murder, executions and adultery.

"We are also pleased to be able to welcome people with mobility problems as the Castle is now much more accessible for people with disabilities."

Six new illustrated sign boards help the visitor visualise life in the Castle, the Priest's House and the Chapel, during its 300 years before being sold to local landlords by Sir Edward 'the Spendthrift' Hungerford in 1686.

In the Priest's House a series of new graphic panels, a model of the castle as it was in 1600, and a virtual tour on a touch screen computer will provide extra tools to understand history and life as it was there, and help less mobile visitors to explore all areas of the Castle. The existing showcases have also been updated with new displays of armour and stonework.
