A Soldier’s Past Is Brought To Life

Berwick Barracks Host A Day of Discovery

Reconstruction of Barrack Room 1757 Reconstruction of Barrack Room 1757 Join English Heritage experts on Saturday 21 July at the Berwick Barracks for a day of activities while exploring the historic barracks, walls and backstreets of the property.

Discover Berwick’s Hidden Past is a free event exploring the history of the barracks, which can be traced through displays of uniforms, badges, medals, weapons and relics – all helping to bring military history to life.

Jon Hogan, English Heritage’s events manager said: “Berwick has always been an important military town. The barracks are a testament to its military importance and the ramparts surrounding the town provide visitors with a sense of the area’s turbulent history.”

The Barracks host a number of free attractions, including By Beat of Drum – an exhibition chronicling the history of the British Army. Visitors will also be able to enjoy access to the contemporary art exhibition called ‘Fleeting Arcadia,’ which explores thirty years of British landscape photography. The impressive site is also home to the King’s Own Scottish Borderers Museum and the Berwick Borough Museum.

Visitors will also be able to go on guided tours led by English Heritage guides where they can discover the old powder magazine and bastions which are not usually accessible to the public.

For those unable to visit on 21 July, there will be another opportunity to visit all the sites mentioned on 8 September as part of Heritage Open Days. Heritage Open Days celebrates England's architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties.

Visitors can also enjoy a walk around the ramparts, with approximately 1.5 miles of outstanding views of the River Tweed, the Northumberland coast and the many interesting buildings within the town.

The event is part of the Council for British Archaeology’s National Archaeology Week. National Archaeology Week is a unique chance to discover and explore the archaeological heritage of the United Kingdom. During this nine day event that runs from 14 - 22 July, people can take part in excavation open days, guided tours, exhibitions, lectures, ancient art and craft workshops and much more.

The event starts at 10am on Saturday 21 July and is free to all visitors.

Berwick Barracks are 0.25 miles from Berwick-upon-Tweed train station and are located on the Parade, off Church Street in the town centre.
