1940s Revisted with Scarborough Castle’s Wartime Weekend Spectacular

Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 July 2007

Scarborough Wartime Weekend Scarborough Wartime Weekend Scarborough Castle is once again under attack!  Pack a picnic of spam sandwiches and home-made ginger beer and join the local auxiliaries as the clifftop landmark is transported back to the 1940s for a taste of wartime Britain!

The weekend will see the castle grounds transformed into a World War II military camp, complete with a tented garrison and some military vehicles.  Soldiers, the Home Guard and civilians will be milling about the site, with visitors being called up to serve King and Country, joining in with drill activities.  Children will even learn how to spot the enemy – a crucial part of home defence!

A true clash will take place each day at 3.00pm, when the castle is invaded by German soldiers and the Allied forces mount a defence and counter attack!

Scarborough Wartime Weekend Scarborough Wartime Weekend The highlight of the weekend will be two sets of aerial displays by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which will see the Ministry of Defence’s own Spitfire, Hurricane and the only flying Lancaster Bomber still owned and flown by the MOD.  The ten minute display will provide a chance to see all three planes in the air at the same time – a spectacular and unique display of three aircraft that helped win a war!  The display takes place at 4.25pm on Saturday 28 and 2.40pm on Sunday 29 July.

Aviation fans will also see a vintage Spitfire aerial display at 3.30pm each day, when the famous aeroplane demonstrates its agility and manoeuvrability in the air.  Air displays will be subject to the weather each day.

Adding to the 40s atmosphere will also be our costumed musical duo, Hautbois, who will be leading sing-alongs throughout each day as well

Milling around with the 21st century visitors will be a group who look like they have just stepped out of a 1940s living room – the cast of Forget-me-not Lane, a play set during World War II which is being performed at the Stephen Joseph Theatre throughout the summer.  For a complete 1940s experience weekend, visitors will be invited to join them at the theatre for a top show to continue the wartime experience on Saturday evening.

The event starts each day at 11.00am, with the castle itself opening at 10.00am.  Admission prices are £5.50 for adults, £4.50 for concessions and £3.50 for children, with a family ticket available for £14.50.  English Heritage members benefit from discounted entry of £1.50 for adults, £1.00 for concessions and 75p for children, with a family ticket for just £3.75.
